2012 Studio work
Since 2008 I have travelled to remote Central Australia on artist camps at Illara Creek. The camps are organised by Sandrifter Safaris. With 18 other artists from around Australia we spend about two weeks at a time, painting and exploring the landscape. Illara Creek is on Aboriginal land of the Luritja people, about six hours 4WD drive south west of Alice Springs.
I had often heard people rave about the colour of central desert, but it didn’t prepare me for the effect it would have on my painting.
The light is extraordinary out there, the way it refracts off the rock formations and the red earth - and of course the clarity of the sky. The nuances of colour are amazing – when I’m there I still can’t quite believe it. At dusk, it’s like the land glows from the inside.
This is where my art comes from.
