St Carthage Catholic Church, Silverton. Far West NSW. Approx 25 km from Broken Hill. Built 1886. This was the first church building erected in the entire district. When completed Silverton was a thriving mining town. Only a few years later Silverton was more like a ghost town as everyone moved to the new mines at Broken Hill. St Carthage stands on the Silverton slope as a reminder of the past. For me it is a parable to the spiritually dry and desolate heart of modern Australia.
