"Escape to Straddie" by Erica Thompson- Courier Mail,Saturday 3rd 2005

Feeling trapped?-Try a weekend escape without leaving Brisbane and head down to the Doggett st studio Gallery, Newstead, to check out Brisbane artist Nick Olsen's exhibition- Architectonic.
Olsen has found a connection between inner city buildings and the wide ocean vistas seen from Point Lookout, Nth Stradbroke Island. This showing of 30 original oil paintings is about escaping a world of contrasts. A section of the gallery is devoted to a series of large cityscapes giving a birds eye view of Brisbane city buidings. "When I'm in the city I feel like I need to escape" says Olsen.
And escape is what he does. The wide horizons and ocean views of Straddie, with it's fibro fishing huts and laid back atmosphere, are depicted in a series of long canvases in another section of the gallery.
" When I step on to the Straddie barge for a painting weekend on the Island, all the stress of city life washes away," says Olsen, who is rising as one of Brisbanes collectable, young artists. He has had 10 other exhibitions at the gallery and recently has completed a commission for the High Court in Canberra.
The exhibition runs until september 17 at 85 Doggett st , Newstead.
