Artist Michael Donnelly
Title Four Trees, Burwood Cemetery
Year 2010
Medium Oil on linen
Height 76
Width 76 cm

From the Exhibition 'Suburban Spaces' at Chapel on Station Gallery, Box Hill

Four Trees was a follow-up painting to the larger, ‘Seven Trees’, painted by the artist and currently on loan, with six other works, to the Uniting Church Synod Offices in Little Collins Street in Melbourne. A stand of large scarred pines along the southern boundary of Burwood Cemetery form a potent screen for the cemetery, its head stones and statuary beyond. It is an image that greets the artist on an approach to Highbury Road from a side street. Trees and memorial stones, including a robed figure with arms raised up, greet the bright sunlight, speaking of life rising out of death.
