Paintings capture memories - Westside News
St. Lucia artist Jennifer Long is presenting Recollections, an exhibition featuring 50 new works.
Recollections reflects on Mrs. Long's memories of a 2006 trip to Italy and France, also the theme of her successfull exhibition last year, Translations in Paint.
"I got very positive feedback and people who missed out on a favourite painting asked me when I was having the next exhibition," Mrs. long said.
"So my thoughts were to do another show and revisit similar themes but with slightly different settings."
Consisting primarily of oil paintings, the exhibition focuses on statues, architectural features and details, the play of light and shadow and views through a doorway ot window, or down an alleyway.
"I love the contrast of new buildings juxtaposed against something that's old and crumbling," Mrs. Long said.
"It's the detail that attracts and there's a little story, told through snippets of life and a moment in time, whether it's people in conversation outside a shop or the the stillness and magical light of Lago di Garda, a lake in Northern Italy."
Working from a studio under her home, Mrs. Long said that every scene she painted recalled the joy of her travels.
"My paintings are like pages in a travelling notebook," she said.
